My dear Amma,
A fortnight ago,a colleague and I were involved in an accident, when we had a collision with a concrete mixer and were dragged twenty feet down the road.
Everybody told me how lucky I was that nothing had happened to me.
Still,it took me a good long while to realise that you had indeed saved our lives Amma, hers and mine. We escaped without a scratch. Every morning's papers have reports of seemingly minor accidents where people lose life and limb; we had a collision with a monster truck, and escaped unscathed. Surely that was your doing, Amma.Thank you for giving me my life.
After I got over the initial shock,my thoughts were on the money involved; and on my untrustworthy colleague. Although she had been driving, she told me very clearly that she would pay only a part of the large sum involved. I felt she had cheated me but also that I had been to blame, for trusting her with the car you gave me, Amma.
That episode taught me some huge lessons, Amma.
You give me many, many things to use and enjoy. If I truly value you, I should maintain your gifts very carefully. Letting people use my possessions is not being generous, it is merely being stupid and careless, and trying to project myself as the soul of generosity.
It cost me a lot of money to learn that lesson, but I am grateful for the learning.
My colleague's cheating really upset me; until I thought of times I had cheated people in various ways too. Life really mirrors us, and with this accident I saw so much in the mirror you held up for me. Unpleasant things, but facing the truth and getting self knowledge is always worthwhile and satisfying.
With love and gratitude Amma,
From your loving daughter,
Vidya
